Why You Should Consider Older Child Adoption

Read full article | No Comments

Everyone loves a baby. They are warm, soft and utterly adorable. Perhaps that is why so many couples who are looking to adopt a kid want an infant. But what about the older children who have been orphaned or abandoned? What happens to them when the biological parents are not there any longer?

Older child adoption has always been an issue with adoption and foster agencies. However, in the last ten years, due to famine, war and neglect, the concern is growing as the numbers of orphaned and abandoned children has grown exponentially.

Newborn adoption has always been very popular. Agency adoptions are usually what would-be parents consider. They are more likely to find a newborn or infant with an agency versus state adoptions, such as the Department of Human Services.

Unfortunately, most agencies do not handle many older children because it is difficult to find families for them. Why? Because a potential adoptive family is afraid of the problems associated with bringing an older kid into their home.

Older child adoption does have tremendous benefits that adopting an infant does not. The first is the age factor. An older kid will be past the stage where you have to take care of all their bodily needs.

You can also count on there being more of a bonding experience because you will be able to communicate with the child. The kid will be able to communicate with you and tell you what is wrong. There are some issues that do come up and must be acknowledged though.

The best way for a potential adoptive family to see if they can handle having an older child in their home is to try being a foster parent first. By doing so, they can get a feeling for the types of problems that older children might have, especially if they suffered abuse.

If they lost their birthparent and birth family, and had no other relatives, or no relatives who willingly stepped up to offer a home, then the foster parents can learn how to deal with this too. Looking into older child adoption is a great option for giving a child a home to call their own. Would-be parents can open their hearts and homes to these abandoned, overlooked kids.

Disney Influences Adoption of New Technology

There has been a lot of bad news lately for the HD DVD high def DVD format in its war with the rival Blu-ray format. For example, sales of Blu-ray discs have doubled the sales of HD DVD since the beginning of the year. This has even been true for a number of titles that were published in both formats and that the HD DVD format was relying on in order to promote special features that is provides and that Blu-ray doesn’t provide.

Both of these formats have a lot in common. Both are able to store much more data than conventional DVD’s on discs that are about the same size. All of that data can then be used to store an entire full length movie in the highest available HDTV resolution on a single disc. The bonus features that come with the movies can also be stored on the disc. The Blu-ray format actually has a much larger storage capacity, by as much as twenty gigabytes per disc, but HD DVD has much more extensive interactive features.

A major practical difference between the two formats is price. While the discs themselves cost about the same amount, HD DVD players have typically cost about half what Blu-ray players cost given the same features. This makes the apparent success of the Blu-ray format even more surprising.

These two incompatible formats have been trying to gain an edge on each other for quite a while, and there are a number of explanations for why Sony’s Blu-ray format has done better than Toshiba’s HD DVD format. For one thing, there are more movie studios publishing their titles exclusively on Blu-ray than there are studios that completely rely on HD DVD. So far Universal is the only studio that only publishes on HD DVD, while a variety of studios publish their titles in both formats, and several rely exclusively on Blu-ray. As a result, there are a lot more titles available on Blu-ray, which probably accounts for its lead in sales.

Another marketing strategy that seems to have paid off was to include a Blu-ray drive in the newest version of Sony’s Play Station video game platform. This Blu-ray drive makes the Play Station 3 a Blu-ray player in addition to being a video game platform. Many Play Station fans bought this device for its video gaming capabilities and are now using it to play Blu-ray discs as well.

Most recently, Disney- which backs the Blu-ray format exclusively- has announced that it will drive another nail in HD DVD’s coffin by releasing what it calls a “Blu-ray Title Wave” of its classic movies in the format. A massive number of movies from Disney are expected to be released throughout 2008, and are likely to generate even more interest in the format. This move is not completely without precedent. In fact, key timing of the release of Disney movie titles in the past was instrumental in the win of VHS in the video cassette format war of the nineteen eighties and in the adoption of DVD technology in the nineties. So there is a good chance that Disney’s “Blu-ray Title Wave” could contribute to a decisive success on the part of Blu-ray in the next year or so.

Virtual Pet Adoption Websites Online

Read full article | No Comments

If you are a parent or you have a little one in your life, I’m sure you are always looking for new discoveries and new toys to buy them. Recently I was online looking for something I heard about called a Virtual Pet Adoption or VPA. Honestly at first I knew nothing about these little guys or even what they were, but I was looking for something fun and creative for my little cousin so I thought I would give it a try. I found a few dozen sites on the right virtual pet adoption I was looking for (the others were live pets you could adopt from around the world for a fee) and it sounds really sweet and like a really cute idea!

Here is how it works; you can find a virtual pet website online and you can adopt that pet and do other things with them such as activities, dress them, feed them, you can even send them to school or get them a job! Before all of that however, you will need to register with the virtual pet adoption website and “choose” your animal, these animals include every day domestics such as kitties and puppies on up to other things like monkeys, frogs, lions and rabbits among other animals.

Once you pick the animal you want, you can then do whatever you want with the pet. Just to try this out and see how it worked and to make sure it wouldn’t be too hard for my cousin, I adopted a frog named George. I even got to pick what color I wanted him to be so I was a little adventurous and picked a poison dart frog which was aptly colored orange and blue!

On a lot of these sites you won’t just play with your animal and dress it, you will also need to feed it, take it for walks and take care of it when it’s sick. This really is a superb idea for children that aren’t allowed to have real pets or aren’t old enough to take care of their own kitty or puppy just yet.

This site isn’t just about “play” though, it’s also a good chance for the children in your life to get a taste of responsibility as well! This is a nice change from a lot of the other games available online because children can actually learn something from this idea! If you want an outlet to keep your kids busy, think about virtual pet adoption since playing with a pet online will keep your child busy for a long time and you won’t have to clean up the mess created by a live pet. I don’t know about your little ones, but this sounds like a fantastic idea for my cousin!

Guide For International Adoption

Read full article | No Comments

Adoption can be defined as the process where a person takes the complete responsibility for the upbringing of a child who is naturally not his or hers. Any person who has a good physical and psychological health and is prepared to look after a child can go for the option of adoption. Adoption is quite common among married couples who are in their 30s but can no longer give birth to a child of their own. However, adoption by older couples, who are in their 40s and 50s, is becoming increasing popular in the recent years.

Even though international adoption has its own advantages, one should look into various pitfalls associated with the process in order to make a prudent decision.

There are various agencies offering international adoption services at affordable rates. However, all the agencies are not genuine and reliable. In order to avoid any fraud related to adoption, it is important to approach a reputable agency. Information about various agencies can be obtained from internet through blog sites, reviews and online forums. Apart from that, information from near and dear ones, neighbors and friends can be useful in this regard. Adoption agencies should be willing to provide information about families who have adopted through them.

Another problem associated with international adoption is political instability in the child’s country of origin. Most children available for adoption in foreign countries are from orphanages and social welfare institutions. All these are likely to suffer with developmental, social and emotional problems primarily due to lack of proper nutrition, sexual abuse, lack of nurturing and substandard living conditions. Such children find it hard to adjust to conditions that are completely alien. This is particularly true for older children. Hence, infants between six months and 2 years of age should be taken for adoption.

Perseverance is the most important feature that older couples should inculcate while going for an international adoption. This is due to the fact that the adopted children belong to an entirely different culture, come from alien surroundings, speak an unknown language and belong to a separate race or have a different ethnic origin. Hence, parents along with children should be prepared to go through a phase of adjustment.

Adopt Pets, You Cannot Buy A Life

Read full article | No Comments

It’s raining cats and dogs. I am not talking about the weather. For sure, I am speaking quite literally about the topic of cats and dogs. Quite a while back I had the opportunity to visit a NYCACC – a place where stray cats and dogs are picked up, sheltered, vaccinated and passed on to people who want to adopt them. Back then I had no idea of what the animal population in my city or country was. Soon enough I began learning about it and I was quite pleased to know that I did more than save a cat’s life when I chose to adopt. Silly as this seems, I probably saved generations of cats and kittens by my one action of adopting rather than buying an animal.

Here are some facts that you might not yet be aware of:

Did you know?

Each day 10,000 humans are born in the US. And each day 70,000 puppies and kittens are born. As long as these birth rates exist, there will never be enough homes for all the animals. As a result, millions of healthy, loving cats dogs, kittens, and puppies face early deaths as a form of animal control. Others are left to fend for themselves against automobiles, the elements, animals and cruel humans. What can you do to stop the suffering? Spay and neuter your pets! Work with SPAYUSA and together we can make a difference. An unspayed female dog, her mate, and all of their puppies, if none are ever neutered or spayed, add up to: in 1 year 16 animals, 2 years 128 animals, 3 years five hundred and twelve animals, 4 years equals 2048, 5 years twelve thousand two hundred and eighty eight. In six years, those animals will have produced over sixty-seven thousand animals from that one family.

That quote is directly from Spay USA.

As long as you keep buying animals instead of adopting animals, you become part of the problem. If you are considering having an animal enter into your family’s space, kindly consider adopting that animal instead of going to a store to pick out the animal. Always opt for adoption. By opting for adoption, you are saving an animal’s life.

Here’s how to Adopt:

Find an adoption center near you and go there.
Ask recommendations from friends. Perhaps they know someone who is giving up a dog or cat for adoption.
Prepare your home before the animal arrives. (Buy a pet dish, cleaning supplies and everything that your animal should receive in when that pet is adopted.
Put a free advertisement in the newspaper stating that you would like to adopt.
Check your community yellow pages and make sure your writing is connected
Put a free advertisement in a local paper, stating that you are available for local adoption of an animal

There are hundreds of ways to prepare you and your pet for an adoption event.

Important Safety Note: If you are animal lovers, pet owners for anyone who knows someone who owns pets, kindly pass on this word that no one should pet cats or dogs on leashes, indoors or outdoors. So many pets die or are put in danger when they are on a leash outdoors and left unattended. If your pet is on a leash, you should be there with them. If not, your pet can become strangled by his own leash. When dogs are on leashes outdoors and left unattended, some of them are attacked by wild animals (squirrels, oppossums, raccoons) and could be killed by them. Also, some of these wild animals can have rabies. So by leashing animals and leaving them unattended, you are putting your pets in great danger.

Other Safety Notes: Keep chocolate away from animals. I have heard that some have bad reactions to it and also that chocolate is fatal to dogs. (I am not sure about cats). Grapes are fatal to cats. A long time ago I had a cat who loved salad. He just loved the salad. And one day I was giving the salad to him and was offering him a grape that came inside the fruit salad. He backed away from the grape as if it was a predator. It surprised me because he loved natural foods. It wasn’t until years later that I read in some vet’s office that cats should not have grapes because they can be fatal to cats. Wow. This cat knew what was not good for him. He won’t go within feet of a grape. It is amazing how God created creatures, in such a way that even though they have no scientific knowledge, their bodies know what is good for them and what is not good. Even man has that built in power – to know what is good and what is not good. Remember your first cigarette? You probably choked and choked but went on to keep smoking anyway. Hey, Bud, that choking was a warning that cigarettes are fatal to human beings. But, we, unlike cats, decide to go against our nature and our health, if we continue to smoke. So, today, having nothing at all to do with cats and animals, do yourself a favor and stop doing the things that your body says are wrong to do. You will be happy that you did yourself that favor.

Remember, adopting a pet is helping to save the world, save animals and save lives. Make your next stop to an adoption place or to a shelter. Today , all over the world, puppy mills are churning out puppies and dogs that are not healthy. Why help support them? Help support the little animals that are already here and you can make a difference in someone’s life.

Adopt a Smaller Pet Bird

Read full article | No Comments

The bird with the scientific name Poicephalus Meyeri originated from the wilds of Central and Eastern Africa. Meyers have gone thru countless hybrids without having to consider instant look “standard” in plume color and other features. Meyer parrots appear to be of six sub-species; each looking perfectly similar with the rest, resulting to lack of dominant marks to distinguish each from the others.

It is believed that breeding has started from the wilds where the bird originated, and gone thru with disregard in the proper manipulations and considerations on the bird’s total breed. Meyeri parrots are inferior in size compared to other birds, preferred choice for household pets. Being small saves you from preparing a large cage, conducive to smaller space in its foster home.

Like other parrots, there’s no assurance that the Meyer will talk. It takes a lot of patience and determination to let it mimic in return to efforts done in training. The disadvantage of its having gone thru unprecedented hybrid processes is believed to have started while on captives in the forests; original breeders, mindless to focus on basic colors.

Later breeders have difficulty in their assessments; as to whether they could still resolve to come up with the desired feather color combinations, that may under mind a fixed determining appearance of the bird. They are less capable to detect how many species are scattered, making for a whole population of confusing inter hybrid in captivity.

Six Sub-species of the Meyer Parrot (Poicephalus Meyeri)

1. Poicephalus Meyeri Meyeri

2. Saturatus

3. Reichenowi

4. Matschiei

5. Damarensis

6. Trasvaalensis

It takes a very knowledgeable observer to detect which this and that, of its sub-kind because of the complicated spread in overall plumage. It’s a general vague overview on the breeding approach; and presenting today a big controversy what touch in hybrid to concentrate, if only to settle to one image. Meyers’ bird breeding has similarities to what was done with the Senegal bird; kind of “mind twist” run-down observation tests which, and what sub-species.

Plumages’ dominant hue is of gray and brown. Back part is gray, and bills are dark gray. Thighs, wings, crown, and shoulders are yellow. Heads and beaks determine what apparent sex it belongs. Males obviously have flatter heads; but to get total assurance of its sex is thru operation or DNA test.

Mature Meyers weigh 100 to 135 grams, measure between 7 to 9 inches (20 to 22 cm.), and length of wings spread to full span is 5 to 6 inches (14 to 14.9 cm). It reaches sexual maturity from age three to four years old, and lay 3 to 4 eggs, hatched after a period of 3 months (12 to 13 weeks) but could leave nest after 9 weeks.

Adopting AIDS Orphans in Africa

Read full article | No Comments

Adopting an AIDS orphan in Africa is one of the ways to help families and communities cope with the ever-increasing number of children orphaned by AIDS in Africa. Many African states resources have been stretched to the limit in an attempt to address the broader effects of the HIV/AIDS situation, especially to assist the high numbers of African AIDS orphan families. However, the governments efforts coupled with those of civil society have not been enough.

Adopting an AIDS orphan is therefore an important intervention because it means saving a life. It means a decreased strain on government resources as that child’s needs – including food, shelter, education, healthcare and other physical and emotional needs – are met by an able and helping hand. To do this is impossible for many African families and communities because they have all been affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic in one way or the other; already they bear some kind of responsibility resulting from this health crisis.

Most of these children are without both parents. In many situations this has left the eldest child in the family, who at times is less than 10 years old, responsible for his/her siblings ranging from any number between 5 to 15 because of the extended family set up and cultures such as polygamy which are still very much practiced in Africa. This responsibility is a burden on that child that they cannot possibly bear for long without succumbing to pressures that may put their own life at risk.

Hence adopting this child, saves his/her life and that of his/her siblings whose plight he/she will speak about. Adoption saves this child from the agony of a life where at a tender they have to deal with the death of both parents whilst at the same time move on and be the head, assume responsibility to care for his/her siblings. The AIDS orphan can grow up like any other child and enjoy being taken care of once adopted. By adopting these children you are giving a better life to one who may be a future leader.

Looking For Miniature Beagles For Adoption? Avoid Puppy Mills!

Read full article | No Comments

While American Kennel Club (AKC) does not list miniature Beagles as a breed, it is common among pet lovers and dog breeders to differentiate standard Beagle and miniature Beagle (the latter also being referred to as Pocket).

Miniature beagle is one of the most popular types of breed in American families. These little dogs are excellent scent hounds. Genetic instincts make them sniff out variety of smells while on the walk, and that’s why it is so much fun to watch a beagle chasing the invisible. You never know what his nose is up to!

Popularity of beagles makes them a target of shady breeders and owners of the so-called puppy mills. Those are breeding facilities that produce poorly bred puppies in large numbers. Puppy mills usually sell beagles via Internet and newspaper ads, but may also supply with dogs pet shops across the country. Beagles that bred in those places often get poor feeding and little to no veterinary care. Inherited genetic diseases, lack of quality food and water, overcrowded cages make young miniature beagles suffer since the very first day of living. Buying a puppy in such places incurs an array of problems for future owners.

That’s why basically there are two reliable ways to get a beagle, either to buy one from a legal breeder or adopt.

Miniature beagles for adoption are available through shelters, rescues and pounds. Many of them have websites online with photos of currently available puppies and their descriptions. Normally you can expect to find an online application form which you can fill in and instantly submit to arrange an appointment with the staff.

Volunteers that care about abandoned beagles will ask you a number of questions, so be sure you’re prepared for a long interview. Your family, job, working hours, number of family members and their age range, housing, size of yard, allergy diseases, pet experience and a whole lot more things will be covered. So get ready for a lengthy process of miniature beagle adoption. Please understand that you’re taking responsibility for an animal, and people who arrange adoption for you want to make sure a puppy is getting a forever home, and will not be abandoned after a year.

Pet Adoption

Read full article | No Comments

People all over the world now keep pets at home, for companionship and unconditional love amongst other reasons. Many pets though are put up for pet adoption each and every year.

There are many reasons why pets are put up for pet adoption, although one of the most common unfortunately is the death of a previous owner, where relatives are unable or unwilling to take on responsibility. There are other common reasons why pet adoption occurs, including lost pets, where owners and pets are separated; owners’ change of mind, where owners no longer feel they can take care of a pet; and one of the saddest reasons; that breeders produce too many pets, which they then can’t sell.

Pet adoption can be an informal or formal arrangement. Some owners will post adverts about pets to a good home, where by they just pass on responsibility to someone else, creating an informal adoption process. More common though is the formal adoption process whereby pet shelters and pounds have pets that they try to find homes for.

Pet shelters and pounds are normally more selective about who can adopt their pets, and will often check out perspective owners and homes before allowing pet adoption to go ahead. Whilst an excellent policy there is a drawback in that pets which cannot find new owners may have to be put down, a thing that no shelter wants to occur.

Many people though, when looking for a new pet, prefer to buy from a breeder or pet store rather than adopt. Pets from shelters often come with a reputation of being difficult to keep and train. There are of course some animals that may have been abused that may take more time to train, but most animals in a pound or shelter are likely to have had some training before making it easier in many ways. Fortunately an increasing number of perspective owners are looking to pet adoption to find their new pets.

If more people were aware of pet adoption then there would certainly be fewer pets being put down each year. There is though much more that the public needs to know. To reduce the numbers of pets being put up for adoption, perspective owners need to be aware of the responsibility that comes with pet ownership. Also breeders need to be more selective about the pets that are bred, and ensure that there is always a market to prevent surplus pets.
